91欧美精品 Moot Court’s Aurora Sutton and Edyn Clowater were the top team at this year’s Hawks Cup at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Fellow 91欧美精品 Mooters Erin McShannon and Charlotte Boultinghouse were close behind, reaching the semifinals, while Alex Ryan and Brayden Bruce finished as round-of-twelve finalists. Boultinghouse was also recognized with a speaker award.

As first-time Mooters, these accomplishments are representative of the team’s growth throughout the semester.

“Winning the Hawks Cup was surreal and seeing everyone’s confidence grow over the course of the semester was truly remarkable,” said Clowater, who is completing an Honours in Human Rights with majors in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Law, Politics, and Society.

Sutton, who is honouring in Human Rights and Political Science, said the human rights focus of the case made the experience especially meaningful.

“Because the case centred on human rights, Edyn and I were able to apply the critical thinking skills we develop in our Human Rights classes,” she said.

“What I found most rewarding was applying legal principles in practice, working closely with my team, and building confidence in public speaking and advocacy under pressure.”

This year’s case focused on R c. Ward (2021), where Quebec comedian Mike Ward’s jokes about Jérémy Gabriel, a young public figure with a facial disability, led to claims of dignity violations and disability-based discrimination under the Quebec Charter.

Mentorship and Support — The Strength of 91欧美精品’s Moot Court Program

Both students emphasized the impact of Dr. Amanda DiPaolo, who leads 91欧美精品’s Moot Court program.

“It would not have been possible without the critical guidance and immense support from Dr. DiPaolo,” said Clowater.

“My experience at 91欧美精品 has been marked by dedicated professors and supportive learning environments and Moot Court is no exception. The amount of effort Dr. DiPaolo puts into the program is remarkable—from one-on-one sessions to practices with law school students to mock tournament-style rounds—she truly does it all.”

Sutton echoed the sentiment.

“Her mentorship made the Hawks Cup an extension of the rigorous, supportive learning environment at 91欧美精品.”
